Our main aim was to address health concerns and promote a healthier lifestyle in our community. The services rendered for free included: Medical consultations Blood pressure checks Blood glucose tests Dental screening Dental consultations Malaria parasite tests We also educated them about female and maternal health and we invited those who needed Antenatal and Family Planning clinics to visit us at the hospital.

The feedback we got was great. The Management of the park was so grateful for the gesture of love extended to them and they commended us greatly for going above and beyond what they expected. It was a thoroughly fulfilling day and we look forward to doing this again in the near future.

Ifeoluwa Giving Back To Her Community

We give full support by way of advice, finance, logistics and any other required resources to members of our community who take the initiative to carry out outreaches within their local community.

For instance, on June 8, 2023, Ifeoluwa Oyelaran, a 200-level Human Nutrition and Dietetics student from Lead City University decided to impact the lives of young pupils in Kajorepo Community Primary School, in Adegbayi axis of Ibadan. She received support from her friends and fellow students, her lecturers, other staff of the university and the Management. Ife, along with the books, bags and other learning materials that she had prepared were transported to the school, the venue of the give-back, by the University.

The university’s Media team also accompanied her to give adequate coverage and publicity to the event. Two of our students in 200L Mass Communication and Media Technology, Ifeoluwa Lawal and Basit Hassan, also went along as trainee journalists, to put into practice skills they had been taught in class. These 2 budding media practitioners produced a beautiful written report and a short video for social media.

The joy and appreciation expressed by the pupils and their teachers was palpable. The event, attended by Ife’s parents, Mr and Mrs Oyelaran, caught the attention of local residents, inspiring them to contribute in their own ways to support those in need around them and demonstrating the transformative power of collective action in creating positive change.

Lifelong Learning Measures

(SDG 4.3.1)

We understand and value lifelong learning and we also understand that oftentimes, people in our community do not have access to the kind of resources that they need to be able to acquire this knowledge.

For that reason, we open our doors regularly to allow people in our community to gain access to our lecturers, our world class facilities and resources, both physical and online and even to attend free training sessions that will help them to improve themselves.

Our campus Radio Station – Lead City 89.1FM is a community radio station that has been a platform to train interested freelancers and students who are interested in radio practice such as programme directing, producing and presentation. Students and publics are given the privilege to get skilled while using the platform and equipment. Entrepreneurs and other career people are regularly invited as guests on these programmes where they can advertise their products and services for free.

The Underrepresented

(SDG 10.6.6)

Video from 2022 Orientation

Our university is situated in the Southwest of Nigeria, which automatically means that the great majority of our population is from the Yorùbá-speaking Southwest region.

However, since our campus is truly inclusive and since we are a truly Pan-Nigerian university, we make all Nigerians and indeed all humans, regardless of place of origin, feel welcome and we want then to enjoy studying on our campus. We speak English as our official language, not Yorùbá. So all students are empowered to express themselves. We have zero tolerance for bullying or discrimination of any sort.

We ensure equal opportunities for all students, including underrepresented groups, and see to it that there are no discriminatory policies or practices in play. We make sure that all communities are well represented and play an active role in decision making. Aside from this, we encourage the creation of students' associations and we empower them to provide peer support, mentoring, and counselling services to their members. When needed, they can also recourse to the university 's counselling centre.

A vibrant example of such students' associations is the Northern Students Association, run by students. With the support of the university management, they regularly hold meetings, orientation programmes, and various social events with a flavour of home.. The leadership of the association takes full advantage of the open door policy that we run at Lead City University to proactively resolve any issues or request for needed support and resources.

We are proud of our diversity at LCU.

Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

Support Services for people with disabilities

(SDG 10.6.8)

Lead City University, Ibadan wholeheartedly embraces the policy of inclusive education for all. In our last academic session, 2022/2023, we admitted 6 new students (4 male, 2 female) with special needs, 5 of them were admitted for Postgraduate studies and 1 undergraduate.

There are also 3 visual impaired students, 2 deaf/dumb students and 1 partially physically challenged. The visually impaired students receive their lectures through severalodes, including attending face to facel classes, online classes, through voice record lecture notes and so on.

Some of these students use computers and manual typewriters to write their exams. A specialist appointed by the university is attached to each student during the exams. The role of the specialist includes ensuring their comfort, assisting to read out the questions, guiding them to insert papers into the typewriter, assisting to set up recording devices for those unable to write, and later transcribing the recording, and other ancillary services.

Special examination scripts are produced for these students. The Postgraduate College usually provides pre-printed and branded typing sheet.

Due to the peculiarities of their examination, for instance the need for interaction between the Special Education Specialist and the students, their Examination venue is usually in an adjoining hall, at the same wenue as the regular students. They are allotted more time according to their peculiarities.

Our students with cerebral Palsy and other similar impairments, are able to attend and participate in classes with their more able colleagues during regular lecture periods. However, unlike the examination questions of the regular students which usually require them to answer 4 essay questions, the special examinations consist of 60 multiple choice questions, as approved by the Senate of the university.

One of our Special students in the 2022/2023 session will be graduating with a First Class grade in Social Studies Education.

Planned actions to recruit students from under-represented groups

(10.6.3)

Visit to Markets and Bus Garages

The Management of Lead City University believes that no one should be left behind or excluded from quality education if they desire it. As such, each session, several outreaches are organised to public schools, market places, car parks and garages and other rural areas where underrepresented groups can be found.

Our admissions teams go into these areas and address parents of university age students one-on-one. Oftentimes, our teams discover that a lack of information and a lack of awareness cause some parents to exclude their children from going to university. By providing information and support that they lack, our teams are able to recruit students from these underrepresented groups, sometimes offering them tuition fee scholarships and thus changing the course of their lives and those of their families for the better.

Full tuition scholarships given to students

Annually, we offer 10 full tuition Scholarships to students from some selected government schools in Oyo state, usually attended by the underrepresented in our community, including Olivette School in Oyo and Queens' School, Ibadan.

Enhancing student life

Over the years, the SAT continue to suggest ways to enhance student life and we appreciate the university management for letting us have our way and provide new direction in several situations, including:

  • Increasing the period before the implementation of late registration penalties
  • Negotiating an increase in the quantity of food served at various restaurants on campus and a reduction in the cost.
  • We had an input in the setting up of the examination portal during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • We requested and were allocated SAT offices. Our offices are very comfortable and make it possible for us to continue to offer support to fellow students and the university management.

As a student governing body, we also help new students find their way around the campus. We help ease the potential anxiety that could be associated with transitioning to a new stage in life.

Counselling Outreach:

Counselling Outreach DASSE

2023 CSR Activity: “There’s still Hope”

Community Counselling Service (Goal 3, 16 & 17)

The Department of Arts & Social Science Education (Guidance & Counselling Unit) conducted a close-out event of corporate social responsibility (2023 edition of Community Counselling Services) on 3rd July, 2023 at the Agodi Correctional Centre, with the Theme: “There’s still Hope” The Community Counselling Services had been ongoing for the past six (6) weeks as a part of the counselling psychology internship programme (Practicum) which is an annual departmental educational programme. This initiative is a corporate social responsibility drive carried out by the Guidance & Counselling Unit, Lead City University, in partnership with the Agodi Correctional Centre, Ibadan for the inmates at the centre.

The postgraduate counselling psychologists on internship had been actively involved in rendering correctional counselling, with the focus to achieve positive behavioral modification, and structured orientation. They also taught quality lifestyle and mental wellness among the inmates, with the hope that it would reduce recidivism in our society on the one hand, and on the other hand, give a ray of hope for positive integration back into the society after their release.

The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Donald Odeleye, the Head of the Department, Prof. Senimetu Ileuma, together with lecturers, counselling psychologists and postgraduate counselling trainees from the Department of Arts & Social Science Education were all out at the grand finale of the community counselling programme.

The controllers, officials of the correctional center and many of the inmates were glad that the academic community, ably represented by the Lead City University Guidance Counselling Unit, considered the essence of human life and existence even at the correctional center.

It is our belief that the corporate social responsibility will promote the mental health programmes at the correctional centre which should bring about positive changes in the community, Oyo State, and Nigeria as a whole.

This outreach programme is part of Lead City University's concerted efforts towards attaining the sustainable development goals, in particular SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and SDG 17, Partnership for the Goals.

The University as a body thought it essential to include our immediate neighbours in our decision to improve the waste disposal methods incorporation of and recycling activities in our community.

In order to do this effectively, the community, called ‘School 2’ made up of all sorts of people from different places, include trades people and artisans and many children, had to be educated first. Trained staff and students of the university used pictures and posters to pass their messages across; they also showed proper waste collection and sorting methods as well as proper, environmentally friendly and sustainable methods.

Through their leadership, they also make meaningful contributions to decisions that the university makes when it comes to the issues of waste management and drainage issues; as a university, we take their contributions and the effect our decisions on board.

A regular visit, once a semester is organised to revisit the community to ensure that they are still applying the skills they were taught. As new students are admitted into the department, they are also taken along so that the good work is sustained.
